How have you demonstrated leadership?
This question always leaves me blank and quiet because in my whole life, I have never ever stepped up and taken a leadership role. Why? I'm not much of a group person, I like to do things myself so I can look back and think : "WOW! I did this by myself!" That's partially the reason why when I play piano I can't seem to accompany anyone because I want to go solo!
However, after year 12 and the numerous amount of group work assignments that I've done, I'm starting to see the perks of working together.
But what makes a group work well?
I don't think the main key is leadership - of course someone will have to take the role as the team leader and designate tasks and ensure that everyone is meeting the dead line, BUT
...
I think the underlying winning elements are trust and respect.
When I thought about it, half the time when I complain about group work sucking - it's because I don't trust that the other person can do a good job and I end up doing their part because they didn't reply to me when I told them to.
It's the same with leading a bunch of people, in any organisation there will be people who dislike you and who are unloving. Fair enough! we are only human. Just because they dislike us doesn't mean you just put your hands up in the air and scream "I don't care" or "Who cares about them".
(warning : do as I say, not as I do haha! I'm human too)
Haters gonna hate right? It's times like these where you rely on your group! or the group of people you are leading. That's where you can get your source of encouragement because you get reminded that there are people who feel your pain, understand what's going on. You're all in it together. In the same boat (even if it is sinking).
This is where respect comes in - you can't possibly lead a group of people if you don't win their respect. Just look at Julia Gillard and her ridiculous Labor Government!
You need respect. People don't have to love you, you just have to be damn brilliant at what you do if you're not like-able.
My two cents for the day. Not that you asked for it but too bad you've already finished reading it!
